Enhancing Your Skin Care Routine

Nov 12, 2016 | Turning 60 and Beyond | 0 comments

I learned in my twenties that having a good skin care routine was important but at that age you don’t think too much about it. Day cream in the morning before you put on your makeup, wash your face before you go to bed and put on night cream. Who ever worried about sunscreen way back then. I have done this for the last 40 plus years and now I realize it was a good thing. But  fast forward to the present.  I look  in the mirror and I always look tired, maybe a bit angry and certainly a lot older looking than I feel on the inside. Sadly, that tired and harassed face looking back at me is the result of aging. We lose our facial fat, the cheeks start to sink or cave in resulting in a more aged, tired and even angry looking face. The epidermic thins and loses elasticity. Yuck!! To our detriment the face is our most visual.

Recently I decided to find out if the creams and lotions and potions we use on our face actually doing anything. I also wanted to know if there are skin care routines that can help or even improve my aging skin, other than fillers, botox and the plethora of other methods out there. There are so many choices in skin care, and every where you turn different companies are touting their products. It’s difficult to choose what is best. Can you get by with the department or drug store brands and does higher quality come with higher prices?

After checking  spas and other businesses around Calgary I came across SkinScience, owned by Marie Bertand. A very fun, genuine and knowledgeable person, Bertrand was trained and worked in the field of biotechnology and immunology and has worked at world renowned leading cosmetic companies. I thought with science based knowledge maybe she had something different to tell me.

My initial consultation included an in-depth analysis of my skin where I was educated on what the aging process does to the skin, complete with pictures and diagrams. This analysis lead to suggestions on the proper products to use. My major concerns are the fine lines and wrinkles as well as the ever more appearing brown spots and sun damage. I then had a medical facial—a 15 step facial treatment adapted to my skin and concerns where Bertrand picked products that she felt would benefit me. Not that I have had many facials but this was the most refreshing, scintillating experience I have had in a long time. With the warm mist and the lights, it was like being transported to another place on a tropical island without a care in the world. It was heavenly and I will definitely be having these on a regular basis.

Bertrand’s product of choice for my skin was Dermaquest. A top international skincare brand, they have been around since 1999 and a leader in plant cell technology. Two of the most enlightening bits of knowledge I came away with is the use of peptides and vitamin C in our skin care regime. Peptides can actually inhibit wrinkle formation and help in treating fine lines that have already formed. It also encourages collagen production which firms, plumps and illuminates the skin. There is actually science behind it. Peptides are fragments of proteins made up of amino acids. They are the building blocks of skin. Vitamin C—some call it the anti-aging superstar—when applied topically has antioxidant benefits, brightening skin tone and fading those brown spots.

So now I have a new skin care routine, morning and night.

  • Wash my face – Dermaquest Essential Daily Cleanser
  • Eye Cream – Dermaquest Peptide Eye Firming Serum
  • Vitamin C – Vivierskin Radiance Serum
  • Moisturizer – Dermaquest Moisturizing Peptide Rich
  • Sun Screen – Skinceuticals Physical Fusion SPF50

Night Time

  • Take off my makeup – MAC Cosmetic Wipes
  • Wash my face – Dermaquest Essential Daily Cleanser
  • Eye Cream – Dermaquest Peptide Eye Firming Serum
  • Serum – Dermaquest Peptide Line Corrector
  • Moisturizer – Dermaquest Moisturizing Peptide Rich

I have done this for five weeks now and I can honestly say I am ecstatic with the results. I can see the changes in the texture of my skin, my brown spots are actually fading. My skin actually glows again. I have even quit wearing foundation. A little blush, mascara and I am set for the day. I am so pleased with my results.

Whatever we choose to do it’s not about altering how we look—it’s about helping you to enhance your looks. You want to match your outside appearance with how you feel on the inside. Not tired or angry, you want to look how you feel.

I highly recommend checking out  SkinScience  if you are looking for an alternative to more invasive procedures.
