January 1 is traditionally a time to reflect on last years events in our lives and what we are going to do differently in 2016—a time for the dreaded New Year’s resolutions. I say dreaded because every year I, along with millions of others, make serious and intentional resolutions and then by February those resolutions are long forgotten. So for this year I am looking for resolutions that I will actually stick to because they are something I know I want to do.
I am not talking about the usual resolutions—lose weight, go to the gym, eat better, spend less—although these are all very common and good and ones I am going to be more conscientious about in the New Year.
But, for this year I am adding a few others that I think all of us should at least think about. I am referring to simple ways to be and keep happier in the New Year. Hopefully they will help you worry less about things that don’t really matter and therefore you can spend all your energy on other things that do matter; loved ones, being successful in your own definition of the word and being happy.
So here goes. These are the resolutions that I am going to set for myself but I believe are resolutions that we can all follow along with.
Not everyone is in a place in their lives where they can do this. But you can also work less by taking those weeks of vacation you have saved up over the years. I, am working only four days a week this year. I have already made the transition at work and January 8 will be my first Friday off. Today I imagine all the things I am going to accomplish on that one extra day off every week. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Yes, it will mean less money in the bank but I am ready for that challenge.
Walk Whenever You Can…
And walk with purpose like you mean it, and to a beat-driven soundtrack. It’s so good for you to keep moving. The first few weeks will be killers I know but I also know it is so important to keep moving. And any time spent with yourself is time to get to know you better.
Accept yourself (& own it)
As I get older and over the last couple of years especially I can say that I am finally getting to know myself and accept myself for who I am. I know I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but that’s okay—no one is or can expect to be. I accept myself just the way I am—quirks and all.
Make each Day Count
Don’t put off until tomorrow and don’t make excuses. Just Do It. I have surprised myself over the last few years what I have actually accomplished and I also found out that I can do anything I put my mind to. The more we push ourselves to do things, the more we realize the only boundaries we have are the ones we set for ourselves.
A helping hand can make someone’s day; whether it be a neighbor, a friend, a family member, even a stranger on the street. A favorite quote of mine is by Maya Angelou who said “ I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

In your house, in your pyjamas, on the street, wherever you feel like it, because — it feels so good and makes you happy.
